Kosovan authorities have begun excavating newly found mass graves near the village of Kaluder in the northern municipality of Zubin Potok, with operations commencing in late July. [1] These burial sites are connected to individuals who went missing during the 1998-99 Kosovo conflict, including 23 intellectuals who disappeared in April 1999, among them surgeon Adem Ademi. [1] The excavation effort is part of ongoing efforts to locate approximately 1,600 people still unaccounted for in Kosovo, comprising roughly 1,200 ethnic Kosovans, around 400 Serbs, and dozens of Roma. [1]
Prior to the excavation work, Kosovan police arrested two Serb men suspected of war crimes in connection with the missing persons cases. [1] The 1998-99 conflict resulted in approximately 13,000 deaths overall. [1] In May 2023, Serbia and Kosovo reached an agreement pledging to clarify the fate of those who disappeared during the war.
