A mathematics tutor at Sydney-based tutoring company Maths Words not Squiggles has been dismissed following comments made to a 14-year-old female student.[1] Evangelos Benetatos was terminated in November after asking the girl whether she wanted to be perceived as a "sex object in the yard," according to a determination by Australia's Fair Work Commission.[1]
The student's mother stated that her daughter had been dressed appropriately in "average-length shorts and a hoodie" at the time of the incident.[1] The remarks caused the teenager significant psychological distress, triggering panic attack symptoms including rapid heartbeat, breathing difficulties, and trembling.[1] Following the incident, the tutoring center's management decided to end Benetatos's employment after learning he had engaged in similar conversations previously.[1]
The Fair Work Commission rejected Benetatos's application to be reinstated, with commissioner Damian Sloan ruling that "his conduct was unacceptable."[1] The commission determined that his behavior constituted sexual harassment, humiliation, and degradation, violating child-safe work standards.[1]
