Redland City Council has proposed that any councillor taking prolonged leave should face a misconduct investigation, a move widely viewed as directed at Mayor Jos Mitchell, who has been absent on medical leave since May.[1] Mitchell disclosed on Facebook that she has been "dealing with a number of health issues, one requiring major surgery and recuperation, over the last 12 weeks," and is not expected to return to work until the end of October at the earliest.[1] Deputy Mayor Julie Talty has assumed mayoral duties during her absence.[1]
The proposal comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the council's conduct record. In the 2024-25 financial year, Redlands received 114 misconduct complaints against its councillors out of 1,008 complaints lodged across Queensland.[1] Since Mitchell assumed the mayoral position, approximately 50 complaints have been filed against her within 18 months.[1] The council's inquiry into governance is holding four public hearings this month and is scheduled to report its findings to the state parliament in November.[1]
