China's export structure is undergoing a significant transformation, moving beyond traditional labor-intensive sectors toward advanced technology-driven industries.[1] The shift represents a progression from the "old three products"—clothing and home appliances—through the "new three products" of electric vehicles and lithium batteries, to the emerging "new new three products" encompassing industrial robots, artificial intelligence, and innovative pharmaceuticals.[1] This evolution reflects China's transition from competing on cost and scale advantages to leveraging technological innovation, engineering capabilities, and industrial coordination to participate in global markets.[1]
The growth in these advanced sectors has been substantial. Industrial robot exports surged 18.6 percent year-over-year in the first half of the year, while surgical robot exports increased 330 percent.[1] Artificial intelligence has become a major driver of broader electronics exports, contributing a 6.9 percentage point increase in exports of electronic components and computer parts during the same period.[1] In the pharmaceutical sector, China's innovative drug licensing deals reached approximately 110 billion dollars in the first half of 2026, representing roughly 80 percent of the previous year's annual total.[1] Chinese pharmaceutical companies occupied eight of the top ten positions in global pharmaceutical transactions during the period.[1]
China's technological leadership extends to AI infrastructure as well. The country's large language models account for 18.81 trillion tokens in weekly global AI model invocations, maintaining the top position worldwide for eight consecutive weeks.[1] Broader trade patterns also reflect economic dynamism, with exports to Belt and Road Initiative partner nations growing 14.8 percent year-over-year in the first half of 2026.[1] Private enterprises have emerged as a key driver, with their imports and exports expanding 17 percent and now representing 57 percent of total trade value.[1]
