The iconic da pan ji (large plate chicken) of Shawan, Xinjiang, has evolved from a humble roadside dish into a major economic engine. Originating in a small restaurant along National Highway 312 in the 1980s, the specialty has developed into a comprehensive industrial chain spanning livestock breeding, agriculture, food processing, dining, and cultural tourism, now generating annual output exceeding tens of millions of yuan and employing over ten thousand people.[1]
The scale of this transformation is substantial. The da pan ji supply chain currently sustains annual chicken breeding operations of 500,000 birds, with monthly slaughter volumes exceeding 40,000 units.[1] More than 1,300 establishments across Shawan operate da pan ji restaurants and related businesses.[1] In December 2024, Xinjiang Yuheng Food Company completed a canned food production line with a 15 million yuan investment, launching commercial production with an annual capacity of 600,000 cans.[1]
The cultural and tourism dimensions have equally accelerated growth. The 11th Da Pan Ji Food Culture and Tourism Festival, held from July 17-19, 2026, attracted 215,000 visitors and generated 148 million yuan in comprehensive tourism revenue.[1] For the January-July 2026 period, Shawan received 3.9584 million tourists, representing an 8.28 percent year-over-year increase, with total tourism revenue reaching 2.731 billion yuan, up 9.85 percent.[1]
