The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission held a public hearing to consider terminating six decades of workforce demographic data collection requirements from private employers.[1] Civil rights organizations and researchers testified against the proposal, arguing that the data is essential for exposing systemic workplace discrimination.[1]
The EEOC's Republican leadership voted 2-to-1 last month to support ending the collection of EEO-1 data, which has been required since 1966 from companies with at least 100 employees or federal contractors with at least 50 workers to submit annual demographic reports.[1] Of the twenty-two speakers who testified at the hearing, the vast majority opposed the proposal, with only six expressing support.[1] Donald Tomaskovic-Devey stated: "Without EEO-1 metrics, our society will fly blind into the future."[1] Rachel Lee underscored the data's significance, noting that EEO-1 is "the only federal tool that exposes what we call the bamboo ceiling phenomenon."[1]
The proposal is currently in a thirty-day public comment period that runs through August 24.[1] Conservative supporters of the Trump administration's position contend that the reporting system is burdensome and may encourage discriminatory practices.[1]
