Lindsay Clancy, a former obstetric nurse, faces murder charges for killing her three young children on January 24, 2023, by asphyxiating them with exercise bands.[1] The children ranged in age from eight months to five years old.[1] Following the incident, Clancy jumped from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down.[1]
During trial proceedings, prosecutors and defense attorneys have focused on Clancy's psychiatric medications and mental state prior to the killings. Mental health practitioner Rebecca Jollotta testified that Clancy reported struggling with sleep, depression, and difficulty finding an appropriate medication combination between November and December 2022.[1] Clancy also indicated suicidal thoughts and intrusive thinking patterns during this period.[1] In December 2022, Clancy described experiencing "intrusive thoughts like I've never had before" and "a feeling of complete despair."[1] Jollotta recommended that Clancy pursue a higher level of care, such as the services available at Massachusetts General Hospital.[1]
Despite these concerning reports, Clancy was discharged from the hospital quickly and advised to continue taking an antipsychotic medication.[1] However, Clancy refused to take Seroquel, despite being warned that discontinuing it could result in "worsening mood and worsening sleep."[1] The prosecution contends that Clancy deliberately murdered her children, while the defense argues she should not be held criminally responsible due to mental illness.[1] According to her legal team, Clancy suffers from bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, and heard voices commanding her to kill her children and herself.[1]
