During the January-to-March 2023 period, rooftop solar generated an average of 4 gigawatts of power, equating to 16% of national energy market demand.[1] In favorable conditions—clear weather combined with low demand periods—rooftop solar can supply approximately 60% of the national energy market's needs.[1] South Australia demonstrates the highest penetration, where rooftop solar meets 28% of baseline demand.[1] However, the capacity of home battery storage remains limited relative to the volume of solar generation produced.[1] The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) projects that small-scale solar capacity could expand to roughly 87 gigawatts by 2050.[1] Even if all suitable residential rooftops were fully utilized, technical potential would reach approximately 61 gigawatts, while Australia's total rooftop solar technical potential—including commercial, industrial, and other buildings—stands at about 179 gigawatts.[1] These constraints underscore why the electricity grid, combined with large-scale renewable energy infrastructure and long-duration storage facilities, will remain essential to Australia's energy future.[1]
