Opera Australia has unveiled an expansive 2027 season that marks the company's resurgence following a period of leadership instability and financial strain.[1] The newly restructured organization will be led by incoming opera director Amy Lane, who currently serves as artistic director at the Copenhagen Opera Festival and will join Opera Australia full-time later this month.[1] The leadership team also includes CEO Alex Budd and music director Andrea Battistoni.[1]
The 2027 season features an ambitious roster of productions spanning classical masterpieces and contemporary Australian works.[1] Highlights include David McVicar's direction of Wagner's Tannhäuser, a Scottish Opera production of The Magic Flute, Puccini's La Bohème, Donizetti's Elixir of Love, Verdi's A Masked Ball, Leah Purcell's The Drover's Wife, and the return of Gilbert and Sullivan works to the company's programming.[1]
McVicar's Tannhäuser production presents a logistical challenge due to its demanding orchestral requirements, including an extensive off-stage brass section, necessitating its staging at the Melbourne State Theatre rather than the Joan Sutherland Theatre at Sydney Opera House.[1] Lane described the season as a "fertile ground" for reshaping the company's five-year strategic vision, while McVicar's conceptual approach has been characterized as "exhilarating."[1]
