Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, once branded "America's worst mayor" by Donald Trump, will serve as a keynote speaker at the Melbourne Assembly conference scheduled for October 19–21.[1] De Blasio will draw on his tenure as mayor from 2014 to 2021 to discuss urban planning strategies relevant to Melbourne's housing challenges.[1]
During his time leading New York, de Blasio implemented several housing-focused policies. His affordable housing initiatives reached approximately 300,000 households, while a mandatory inclusionary zoning policy required roughly 25 percent of newly constructed units to be affordable.[1] Over 2 million New Yorkers lived in private apartments where rent increases were determined by a public board.[1] De Blasio's approach also included high-density zoning near transit hubs and conversion of office buildings for residential use.[1]
The speaker's experience comes as Melbourne faces significant demographic and housing pressures. The city's population is projected to reach 9 million by 2050, intensifying demand for affordable housing.[1] Both in Australia and New York, typical tenants spend approximately one-third of household income on rent, underscoring the shared affordability crisis.[1] De Blasio will be joined at the conference by Carlos Moreno, who developed the "15-minute city" concept.[1]
