A candlelight vigil was held in Islamabad on Tuesday to honor ten mountaineers who perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak on July 30, 2024.[1] The 8,051-meter peak, the world's twelfth-highest mountain, claimed the lives of climbers from Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.[1] Search and rescue teams recovered eight bodies, including those of six Nepali climbers, while two remain missing.[1]
Among the deceased was Nimal Purja, a renowned British-Nepali mountaineer whose death marked a significant loss to the international climbing community.[1] Nepal's Ambassador to Pakistan, Rita Dital, quoted Purja's words: "Giving up is not in my blood."[1] The rescue operation was led by Sirbaz Khan, a prominent Pakistani mountaineer, whose teams worked through treacherous weather conditions to conduct the difficult search and body recovery efforts.[1] Rescuers completed their operations and transferred the recovered remains to a location suitable for air transport.[1]
