Australia's opposition Coalition has announced plans to reduce net overseas migration to below 180,000 people annually, marking the lowest level since the Global Financial Crisis.[1] This target sits 45,000 people below the current Labor government's projected intake.[1]
Opposition housing spokesperson Andrew Bragg will detail the policy proposal at the National Press Club on Wednesday, with plans to achieve the reduction through modest cuts across family visas, international student numbers, working holiday maker visas, and post-study work visas.[1] The proposal comes as Australia has experienced significant population growth of 1.8 million people since mid-2022, with 1.5 million of that increase driven by net overseas migration.[1] Over the same period, housing construction added only 550,000 dwellings, leaving an estimated shortfall of 130,000 homes.[1]
The Coalition's target echoes migration levels seen during the Global Financial Crisis, when net migration fell from 300,000 to 175,000 within approximately 18 months in 2009-10.[1] The announcement follows the Labor government's decision last week to cancel a scheduled migration policy speech that was expected to announce a reduction in net migration from 300,000 to 225,000.[1]
