South Korean police have arrested two Chinese nationals on charges of illegally gathering military intelligence near South Korean military and U.S. Forces Korea facilities.[1] The suspects, a man in his 60s identified as A and a 45-year-old Korean-Chinese man identified as B, both former servicemen in the People's Liberation Army, are accused of separate operations to obtain sensitive defense information.[1]
The first suspect, A, allegedly checked into a hotel less than one kilometer from Gunsan Airport in North Jeolla Province in April and used a software-defined radio (SDR) receiver to intercept communications between fighter jets and air traffic control towers.[1] The second suspect, B, is accused of bribing employees at Camp Humphreys, a U.S. military base in South Korea, between November 2021 and May of this year to obtain military materials.[1] The stolen information included details on the joint Korean-U.S. military exercise "Ulchi Freedom Shield," South Korean military personnel records, military command positions, and photographs.[1]
When questioned by police, suspect A claimed that "intercepting aircraft communications is my hobby."[1] South Korean law provides severe penalties for such offenses, with treason charges carrying potential sentences of life imprisonment or a minimum of three years, violations of the Communications Secrets Protection Act carry sentences of one to ten years, and violations of the Military Bases Act carry up to three years imprisonment or fines of up to 30 million won.[1]
