Courts in England and Wales have prohibited Meta glasses from entering judicial buildings, following a similar ban implemented by New York courts the previous month.[1] The Court and Tribunals Service (CTS) has made clear that Meta eyewear will be confiscated from anyone attempting to bring the devices into courthouses.[1] The prohibition stems from concerns that Meta glasses can record video, which would violate the longstanding rule against capturing images or footage within courtrooms without official authorization.[1] Unauthorized recording in UK courts can result in prosecution for contempt of court.[1]
While smartphones are permitted in courtrooms under the condition that they are not used to record court proceedings, Meta glasses present a particular concern due to their built-in recording capability.[1] The glasses, which retail between £269 and £469, sold approximately seven million units last year.[1] A judge previously accused an applicant of obtaining "improper assistance" by wearing smart glasses during a High Court hearing.[1]
