The organization is contending with significant financial pressures, having recorded a net loss of 5.6 million Australian dollars in the 2024-25 financial year.[1] Operating expenses have risen to 137 million Australian dollars, marking an increase of 9.3 million dollars compared to the previous year.[1] However, the proposed cuts have drawn strong opposition from two unions, which argue the reductions would undermine animal care and wildlife conservation efforts.[1] Zoos Victoria has stated that front-of-house services will remain unaffected by the restructuring.[1]
Union representatives have questioned the logic of the cuts. Jiselle Hanna, state secretary of the CPSU, asked: "If this proposed restructuring is indeed driven by financial pressures, why would you cut an entity that brings in millions of dollars in revenue annually through school visits?"[1] Approximately 600 employees—roughly two-thirds of the total workforce—have already responded to the proposal.[1] A final decision on the restructuring is scheduled to be announced on August 25, 2025.[1]
