Salah Sarsour, chairman of Wisconsin's largest mosque, has spoken publicly about his experience after being released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention. 1 Sarsour was held by ICE for more than 80 days before his release. 1
During his detention, Sarsour described experiencing what he characterized as dehumanizing treatment. 1 He stated that the conditions evoked painful memories from decades earlier, saying "It all brought back old memories of things that happened to me when I was tried in Palestine." 1 Sarsour elaborated on the specific nature of his treatment, noting "The humiliation, the treatment by guards, the way they talk to people, the way they try to put people down." 1
The ordeal took a physical toll on Sarsour, who lost more than 30 pounds during his time in custody. 1
