A section of Ming Dynasty city wall in Zhongyang County, Shanxi Province, approximately fifty meters in length, was demolished and reconstructed, with the removed foundation stones and bricks disposed of as waste materials.[1] The Shanxi Provincial Cultural Heritage Bureau's Cultural Relics Supervision Office confirmed on August 11 that it had become aware of the incident and launched an investigation.[1] The National Cultural Heritage Bureau has also taken note of the matter.[1]
Officials from Zhongyang County Forestry Bureau contested the characterization of events, with Station Chief Du Fengshan describing the work as part of a "renovation and beautification project" rather than demolition and reconstruction.[1] Following the national launch of the fourth cultural relics survey in December 2023, the city wall was incorporated into the survey registry after the renovation work.[1] The structure has not yet been formally designated as a protected cultural heritage site and is classified as a lower-level cultural relic.[1] Enforcement personnel from the Lüliang Municipal Cultural Heritage Bureau have arrived in Zhongyang County to conduct on-site investigations.[1]
