A 50-year-old Australian mining project manager died following a fall from a zipline canopy tour in Far North Queensland, with his family blaming preventable safety violations by the operating company.[1] Dean Anson Sanderson fell approximately 25 metres during the incident at Cape Tribulation, located 140 kilometres north of Cairns, on October 22, 2019.[1] His wife Shannon also fell from the zipline and sustained serious injuries.[1]
At the conclusion of the coroner's investigation, Sanderson's family expressed anger over the circumstances surrounding his death.[1] His daughter Jessica stated: "This is not some freak accident. This is a tragedy that was destined to happen."[1] The family's legal representative, April Freeman, identified critical failures at Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours, the company operating the attraction, pointing out that "the wire rope clamp at the end of the cable experienced complete failure."[1] According to the investigation findings, the company had failed to register design changes, employed unqualified staff, and allowed essential safety equipment to deteriorate.[1] Coroner Wayne Pennell indicated he would return his findings before the end of October.[1]
