Australia's counter-terrorism leadership has sounded an alarm about the escalating radicalization of young people, citing online extremism and inadequate content moderation on social media platforms as primary drivers.[1] Brendan Dowling, appointed in May as the counter-terrorism coordinator for the Department of Home Affairs, warned at a Royal Commission hearing that the nature of extremism targeting adolescents has fundamentally shifted.[1] The new wave of violent extremism, experts noted, glorifies violence for its own sake rather than as a means to an ideological end, and exhibits a chaotic, incoherent character drawing from multiple sources including antisemitism, neo-Nazism, and white supremacist ideologies.[1]
Dowling emphasized that "in almost all cases there is an online dimension, including access to violent extremist material and exposure to like-minded communities."[1] He further highlighted that the Russian government operates propaganda machinery and bot networks globally in attempts to identify and exploit divisive and extremist topics.[1] The scale of youth radicalization programs has expanded since 2022, according to Steve Barracosa.[1] The threat remains tangible: in a December incident at Bondi Beach, both Naveed Akram and his father Sajid Akram faced charges related to radicalization driven by ISIS propaganda.[1]
