Fiji's Corrections Service is investigating an alleged assault on an Australian prisoner at the Lautoka Remand Centre in western Fiji.[2] Security footage of the incident has been released publicly, prompting the inquiry.[1]
The assault occurred on June 14, 2026.[2] Prison guard Asaeli Sorovaki has been charged with assault in connection with the incident and was released on bail of 1,000 Fijian dollars, equivalent to approximately 637 Australian dollars.[2] Three senior officials from the Fiji Corrections Service's western division have been suspended pending internal disciplinary hearings, with a reconciliation hearing scheduled for September 7, 2026.[2] The Fiji Corrections Service stated that the prisoner sustained no serious injuries in the incident.[2] Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing support to the inmate.[2]
