China's emerging companion economy is flourishing across diverse service categories, including mountain hiking accompaniment, medical visit assistance, and companion robots.[1] This new economic model addresses consumer demands for emotional fulfillment and social experiences, with the market reaching hundreds of billions of yuan in scale.[1] Hundreds of companies in the sector have secured financing, and multiple unicorn enterprises have emerged from the industry.[1]
The breadth of companion services demonstrates the market's expansion. Daily Mount Tai hiking accompaniment services charge 800 yuan per person, and one such company has grown from fewer than 10 employees to approximately 370 staff members.[1] Independent medical companions earn roughly 10,000 yuan monthly.[1] The broader silver economy, which encompasses medical visit assistance services, has reached a market size of 7 trillion yuan.[1]
China has taken the lead in regulatory oversight of the companion economy sector. On July 15, the Cyberspace Administration of China, along with the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, and the State Administration for Market Regulation, officially implemented the "Interim Measures for Managing Anthropomorphic Artificial Intelligence Interactive Services."[1] This framework establishes a global benchmark for the AI companion industry.[1] As noted by Barron's magazine: "China's next wave of consumer stories may no longer center primarily on goods, but rather on services that make life warmer, easier, or less lonely."[1]
