Indonesia is contending with multiple wildfires during an unusually severe dry season.[1] The largest fire has engulfed approximately 743 hectares (1,836 acres) in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java.[1] In Jambi Province on Sumatra, more than 50 hectares of peatland have burned, with flames that began on Wednesday now spreading across the Sangir Lama village in the Muaro Jambi district.[1]
To combat the escalating blazes, authorities have mobilized substantial resources including at least three helicopters for water bombing operations and approximately 300 firefighters and disaster personnel deployed to the Sumatran fire site.[1] Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated: "We continue to coordinate our efforts to address and prevent forest and land fires."[1] Officials have flagged August and September as the most critical months ahead, warning that strengthening El Niño conditions are expected to further increase fire risk.[1] The fires have already caused haze to blanket certain areas, threatening air quality across the affected regions.[1]
