South Australia has announced the country's first major royal commission into artificial intelligence, with the investigation set to commence in October.[1] The inquiry will examine policy solutions across education, industry, public health, and the arts sectors.[1]
State Premier Peter Malinauskas warned that uncontrolled AI technology poses significant risks to society and the future of work.[1] "We are at a genuinely important crossroads," Malinauskas stated.[1] Three royal commissioners will be appointed within the next four to six weeks to lead the investigation, which is expected to deliver its report by July 2027.[1]
The government has allocated approximately three million Australian dollars for the inquiry.[1] Evidence will be sought from business, industry, unions, technology developers, academic institutions, and the creative sector.[1] The initiative follows South Australia's recent memorandum of understanding with OpenAI, which aims to develop AI skills, support innovation, and explore applications of AI in government services.[1]
