A joint report released by Deloitte China, the Beijing Energy Society, and Longji Energy Group projects that global demand for green fuels in aviation and shipping will reach 34 million tonnes by 2030, while sustainable aviation fuel production is expected to reach only approximately 2.4 million tonnes in 2026, accounting for less than 0.8% of total aviation fuel consumption [1]. This substantial gap underscores the urgency of ramping up production capacity to meet anticipated demand.
China has emerged as a critical driver of global green fuel capacity expansion, with significant production potential across key sectors [1]. The country's potential annual production capacity for green ammonia, green methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel exceeds 20 million tonnes, 50 million tonnes, and 8 million tonnes respectively [1]. China has also committed to developing the green fuel industry by 2026 [1]. According to Guo Xiaobo, a senior partner at Deloitte China's Strategic Customer Services division, "leveraging biochemical technology to achieve industrial breakthroughs is the core driver for China to close the capacity gap in green fuels over the next decade while balancing energy security and carbon neutrality goals, as well as securing global industry influence" [1].
