Colombia's newly inaugurated President Gustavo Petro has launched military operations against armed groups immediately following his Friday swearing-in, marking a sharp departure from his predecessor's negotiation-focused approach.[1] Armed forces killed Hernando Forero, the leader of the rebel group Frente 28, along with five other militants in a military operation in central Colombia over the weekend.[1] Forero's organization is one of several FARC splinter factions that broke away following the 2016 peace agreement between the government and the main rebel group.[1]
The new administration's hardline security agenda is being bolstered by international support, with the United States pledging $1 billion in security assistance to Colombia.[1] Petro had campaigned on tackling what he termed "narco-terrorism," including through airstrikes.[1] The escalation of violence coincided with the change in leadership, as two separate bombings occurred the day after his inauguration: a car bomb detonated in Cauca Province, and a police officer was killed by a drone bomb in Cesar Province.[1]
