Vermont voters headed to the polls Tuesday for a state primary election in which Democrats sought to nominate a candidate capable of defeating Republican Governor Phil Scott.[1] Two Democratic contenders—economist Amanda Janoo and former children's advocacy organization CEO Aly Richards—competed for the nomination.[1] The primary took place as Scott prepared for a general election rematch after securing 73 percent of the vote in 2024, an increase from his 69 percent showing in 2022.[1]
Richards entered the race with a financial advantage, having raised approximately $453,000 compared to Janoo's roughly $308,000, giving her twice the cash reserves as of late July.[1] Richards also secured endorsements from former Governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin.[1] The Democratic primary unfolded against the backdrop of Scott's unique position among Republican governors—he stands as one of only two GOP chief executives serving in states won by Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.[1] Scott voted for Harris in that race and for President Joe Biden in 2020.[1]
The state's approximately 501,000 registered voters as of July faced the choice amid broader Democratic setbacks, with the party having lost more than 20 state legislative seats and its supermajority in the 2024 elections.[1] Polls closed at 7 p.m. Eastern time.[1]
