British Columbia declared a state of emergency on Saturday as a rapidly spreading wildfire forced over 20,000 residents to evacuate from communities across western Canada.[1] The Bald Range fire, which ignited on Friday, expanded to 136 square kilometers within hours and continues to advance toward towns along Okanagan Lake.[2] One person—an 80-year-old woman—died while fleeing the blaze.[2]
As of Monday, the fire remained uncontrolled, and authorities were still tallying the full extent of property destruction.[2] The region faces exceptional fire risk conditions, with more than 100 wildfires burning across British Columbia, 70 of which started within the previous week.[2] Water levels in Okanagan Lake have dropped to their lowest point since 1992 as of July 2024, compounding the severe drought conditions gripping the area.[2] A previous fire, the Bradley Creek incident, destroyed over 200 homes.[2]
