Researchers have developed bamboo-fiber-reinforced, fully biodegradable materials for logistics packaging by combining bamboo fibers with compostable plastics.[1] In June 2026, the China Express Association released an initiative titled "Replacing Plastic with Bamboo, Moving Toward Green," which outlines an ambitious five-year roadmap for adoption.[1] The plan calls for annual usage of bamboo-based express packages to grow progressively from 200 million units to 1 billion units, representing an average year-on-year growth rate of 50%.[1]
Leading express delivery companies have already begun field testing these bamboo-based packages in Sanming, Fujian Province, with positive initial results.[1] According to Tao Chunyan, deputy director of the Sanming branch of China's Postal Administration, major courier brands have conducted application trials within the city.[1] However, cost remains a consideration in the rollout strategy. Liu Yuxiang, a representative from S.F. Express, noted that bamboo-based packaging bags currently cost approximately 10% more than conventional packaging materials.[1]
