A tragedy unfolded along the Scioto River in Powell, Ohio, when a man struggling in the water prompted multiple people to attempt a rescue, resulting in five deaths. [1][2] Two female bodies were recovered on Sunday, while three male bodies were found the following day. [2][4]
According to Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer, one adult began struggling in the river, and when others entered the water to help, all five were swept away. [2][4] "Even when water appears to move slowly, you can still be swept away in slow-moving currents," Lieutenant Heather Byers cautioned. [2]
The victims included two married couples from Honduras and another adult. [2] Named among the deceased were 33-year-old Jose Mario Pineda Dias and 28-year-old Marina Suyapa Regalado. [2][4] Four of the five drowned individuals were Honduran citizens. [4]
A photograph taken by Baptist pastor Marcus L. Martin on the day of the incident, showing five adults wading waist-to-hip deep in the river, is believed to be the last image of the group alive. [3][4]
The drowning left two children, ages 8 and 10, orphaned. [2][4] Both children are currently under the care of Ohio authorities. [1][2] Officials indicated that the repatriation process for the remains could take at least one month, with some estimates suggesting six weeks. [2][4]
