Armed clashes between Iran-backed Houthi forces and Saudi Arabia have intensified, threatening to unravel the UN-brokered Yemen ceasefire agreed in 2022.[1] The spiral began on July 13 when Saudi airstrikes targeted the runway at Sana'a airport in Yemen's capital, preventing an Iranian aircraft from landing.[1] The Houthis subsequently rejected a compromise proposal from the Saudi-backed Yemeni government to replace the Iranian flight with an alternative carrier.[1]
In response, the Houthis launched retaliatory strikes across multiple fronts.[1] They attacked Abha airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia, announced a blockade of Red Sea shipping routes serving Saudi Arabia, and targeted Saudi oil and gas facilities.[1] The militant group also fired dozens of missiles and drones at military camps in central and southern Yemen, resulting in dozens of soldier and civilian casualties.[1] The Saudi-led coalition countered with airstrikes on Hodeidah and Kamaran Island, while reinforcing ground forces in preparation for a potential ground offensive.[1]
UN envoy Hans Grundberg warned that "Yemen today faces the highest risk of large-scale conflict since the UN-brokered ceasefire in April 2022."[1]
