U.S. President Donald Trump announced a conditional loan from the Pentagon's Strategic Capital office to Australian mining company Sunrise Energy Metals to develop the Syerston scandium project in New South Wales.[1] The Pentagon committed $400 million in financing, equivalent to approximately $560 million AUD, to support the venture.[1]
The announcement triggered an immediate surge in Sunrise Energy Metals' share price, which climbed from $15.93 to $18.49, representing a 16 percent gain, with intraday highs reaching $19.63, or a 19 percent increase.[1] The company's market capitalization rose to approximately $3.1 billion AUD.[1] Robert Friedland, the company's chairman and largest investor, saw his personal wealth increase by approximately $124.5 million within 1.5 hours as a result of the stock movement, with his shareholding value rising from roughly $536.63 million to $660.63 million.[1]
The Syerston project, located near Fifield southwest of Dubbo in New South Wales, contains one of the world's largest and highest-grade scandium deposits.[1] The White House characterized the venture as "the world's premier primary scandium mine."[1]
