The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2027 season, with a major highlight being a new work titled "Joan of Arc" created by composer Mary Finsterer and librettist Tom Wright.[1] The piece will receive its world premiere in October 2027, conducted by Benjamin Northey.[1]
Finsterer has described the historical figure as "an outsider who refuses to allow powerful institutions to define her," suggesting a fresh perspective on the saint's narrative.[1] The 2027 season will feature 13 world premieres overall, with 12 of these works composed by Australian composers, including two pieces by Indigenous composers.[1] More than 40 Australian solo artists are scheduled to perform across the season.[1] Chief Conductor Jaime Martín will lead the opening concert in February, which will include Beethoven's Ninth Symphony alongside other works.[1]
