Andy Green, a retired British Royal Air Force pilot, is set to challenge the land speed record on Tuesday at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, located approximately 100 miles west of Salt Lake City.[1] Green will drive the JCB Hydromax, a 32-foot hydrogen-powered vehicle developed by JCB, in an attempt to surpass existing speed records.[1] The vehicle is powered by two hydrogen-burning engines with a combined output of 1,600 horsepower, having already reached 368.347 miles per hour during practice runs.[1]
Green holds a remarkable history with land speed records, having previously set the diesel-powered land speed record of 350.092 miles per hour two decades ago, and achieved 763.035 miles per hour in 1997 using dual jet engines.[1] JCB invested over $134 million in the development of the hydrogen engine technology for this attempt.[1] The current hydrogen-powered engine world record stands at 185.5 miles per hour, while the electric vehicle land speed record is 341.3 miles per hour.[1] The challenge is scheduled to take place approximately one hour before sunrise on Tuesday.[1]
