Australian singer, actor, and television presenter David Campbell has emphasized the critical importance of hearing health for performers, noting that auditory precision serves as an artist's ultimate instrument.1 Campbell explained his perspective on the matter, stating: "Sound is my rhythm. It is how I guide my life. If sound goes wrong, the entire performance feels out of sync."1
The call to action comes alongside findings from a Specsavers-commissioned survey revealing significant gaps in hearing health awareness and testing practices among Australians. More than 52 percent of older Australians regularly listened to loud or live music during their younger years, yet 45 percent of all Australians have not undergone a hearing test in over a year, and 17 percent of those aged 55 and above have never been tested.1 These statistics underscore a troubling disconnect between past exposure to loud sound and current preventive care habits.
The research also uncovered concerning behavioral patterns among those experiencing hearing difficulties. Sixty-one percent of Australians with hearing challenges adopt passive withdrawal strategies, with 31 percent admitting to pretending they have heard conversations while nodding in agreement, and 33 percent avoiding restaurants or noisy social venues altogether.1 Melissa Chandler, senior audiologist at Specsavers Australia, has stressed that hearing health is integral to cognitive wellbeing, underscoring the importance of early detection and regular hearing checks for maintaining social connection and mental acuity.1
