Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, faces trial on charges related to the murder of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas nearly three decades ago.[1] Davis is charged with one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon with intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang.[1] Jury selection began on Monday, with the trial expected to last approximately one month.[1]
Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas and died six days later.[1] The prosecution plans to prove that Davis orchestrated the killing and provided the murder weapon, rather than arguing he pulled the trigger himself.[1] Prosecutors intend to call between 35 and 45 witnesses.[1] Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, Davis's nephew, has long been suspected as the actual shooter but has never been charged in connection with Shakur's death.[1]
Davis co-authored a memoir titled "Compton Street Legends," in which he detailed his specific role in the shooting.[1] Meanwhile, Marion "Suge" Knight, a music executive and another witness to the event, is currently serving a 28-year sentence in a California prison and has previously indicated unwillingness to testify in Davis's case.[1] Sean "Diddy" Combs, who is serving a four-year sentence in a New Jersey prison, was mentioned in Davis's book as someone Davis claimed wanted Knight and Shakur dead.[1]
