Iran is leveraging control of the Strait of Hormuz to pressure the Trump administration into honoring a memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 but subsequently abandoned.[1] The agreement was violated within weeks, with Trump declaring the accord "over."[1]
Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr laid out the country's demands on Saturday.[1] Iran is calling on the United States to lift its naval blockade, cancel sanctions on Iranian oil and gas exports, withdraw military forces from the Middle East, pay war reparations, unfreeze and return frozen assets, and cease attacks on Iranian allies including Lebanon.[1] Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that negotiations with Oman over Strait of Hormuz passage conditions "are progressing well and are in the final stage," yet cautioned that "reaching an agreement with Oman does not mean the strait will open—it depends on whether the conditions conveyed through the mediator are met."[1]
Trump expressed confidence on Sunday to Axios that Iran would ultimately concede due to economic hardship and inflation, without threatening new military action and noting that "we are keeping this low-key."[1]
