On Saturday, Merzel had called a balk on Sale in the fifth inning, resulting in runner Spencer Jones advancing to score.[1] According to crew chief Dan Bellino, Sale was penalized for the balk because he failed to indicate he would pitch from his normal delivery.[1] Sale recorded the loss in that contest, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings in what became his first defeat of the season.[1] The Sunday ejection occurred when Sale protested loudly near the Braves' clubhouse before the game commenced.[1]
This marks the fourth ejection of Sale's career.[1] His previous ejection came on August 3, 2019, when he was playing for the Boston Red Sox.[1]
