The European Commission announced on Monday that ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox have crossed the threshold of 45 million average monthly users and will now be classified as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) under the Digital Services Act (DSA).12 The three platforms must now comply with enhanced regulatory requirements, including the removal of illegal content and measures to protect minors' privacy and safety.2 Violations of these obligations can result in fines of up to 6 percent of global revenue.2
ChatGPT becomes the first artificial intelligence chatbot to fall under the DSA's jurisdiction, in addition to being subject to the EU's AI regulations.1 The newly designated platforms are required to assess and mitigate risks related to illegal content, protection of minors, and user psychological health.1
