A right-wing faction within Australia's Liberal Party known as the Reformers achieved a significant organizational milestone in July 2018 when it successfully took control of the Coffs Harbour branch, marking the first victory in their strategy to capture party branches across the country.[1] Robert Assaf, the founder of the Reformers, declared at the time: "God's granted us a victory."[1] The takeover was bolstered by a substantial financial contribution, with Michael O'Hara donating $25,000 to the faction.[1] Following the Reformers' assumption of control, the Coffs Harbour branch comprised 25 members, fourteen of whom had joined within the preceding twelve months.[1]
The faction leveraged its newfound influence in the branch to shape the outcome of the 2022 Senate preselection, where Jim Molan ultimately defeated Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, costing her the Senate seat she had held.[1] Fierravanti-Wells responded to her preselection loss with a combative parliamentary address delivered on the evening of the March 2022 budget, during which she declared Prime Minister Morrison "unfit to be Prime Minister" and leveled accusations of misconduct against Wade McInerney.[1] The Morrison government fell from power two months after Fierravanti-Wells' preselection defeat.[1]
