The 2026 International Conference on Basic Sciences opened on August 9 in Beijing, bringing together over 800 researchers from more than 30 countries worldwide [1]. The gathering included more than 80 international award winners and academicians from China and abroad, as well as over 400 renowned scholars and young researchers [1].
The conference presented the Basic Science Medal to nine scientists, among them multiple Chinese scholars who received the honor, underscoring the influence of the Chinese research community in global mathematical and physical frontiers [1]. The recipients span three major fields—mathematics, physics, and engineering [1]—and include Claire Voisin, Yao Hongze, Zhang Shouyi, Liu Ruowei, Wang Yifang, Wen Xiagang, Bao Zhinan, Zhuang Xiaowei, and Zhang Feng [1].
Conference Chairman Qiu Chengtou remarked that China's support for basic research has reached unprecedented levels, spanning from stable funding and long-term planning to talent recruitment and platform development, establishing the country as fertile ground for global basic science [1]. Addressing artificial intelligence's growing role, Qiu stated that humanity's distinctive capacity for original thought will not be replaced by machines, and the scientists' unwavering commitment to truth and beauty will endure through the ages [1].
