The legislation restructures the role of First Nations commissioner, downgrading it from an independent position to one of two deputy commissioners.1 More controversially, the bill grants the minister authority to recommend the removal of commissioners or deputy commissioners for "any reason or no reason," rather than restricting dismissals to cases of misconduct, incapacity, or neglect.1 Former First Nations Commissioner Natalie Lewis characterized the changes as transforming the office "from an independent statutory oversight function into a substantially responsive function to government,"1 while current executive director Amy Lamoin stated that "Queensland will empower its new child protection regulator with more information, more regulatory power, but less independence assurance."1
The parliamentary committee examining the bill is scheduled to conclude hearings by September 18.1 In related government appointments, Linda Waugh is transitioning from Integrity Commissioner to Ombudsman, effective November 23.1 The Queensland Treasury has also created a new "philanthropic liaison lead" position, with the contract extending until June 2029.1
