Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement claimed responsibility for a drone strike against the Aramco refinery in Gazan on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast.[1] According to the Saudi energy ministry, a fire broke out at the facility but was extinguished with no casualties reported.[1]
The attack marks an escalation in broader regional tensions centered on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander and Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr stated that Iran would maintain its blockade of the strait until the United States "corrects its behavior."[1] Iran has set explicit preconditions for reopening the waterway, demanding that the U.S. cease all threats against Iran, end military operations involving Iran and its regional allies, lift blockades on Iranian ports and vessels, and remove sanctions while releasing frozen assets.[1]
Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi characterized discussions with Oman as approaching their "final stage" but cautioned this should not be interpreted as an imminent reopening of the waterway.[1] Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesman Hosein Mohebi emphasized that any reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would be independent of concurrent negotiations with Oman.[1] The conflict began in late February and had persisted for approximately five months at the time of reporting, with the strait accounting for roughly 20 percent of global oil and natural gas shipments before the war commenced.[1]
