A Seoul court has sentenced Hak Ja Han, leader of the Unification Church and widow of the movement's founder Sun Myung Moon, to two years in prison for bribery offences.2 The conviction stems from allegations that the church presented expensive gifts to Kim Keon Hee, wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, in exchange for commercial and political advantages.2 Between April and July 2022, the church gifted Kim two Chanel handbags and a diamond necklace valued at 80 million Korean won (approximately $57,900 or £42,500).2
Kim Keon Hee has already been sentenced to 20 months in prison earlier this year after being convicted of accepting the bribes.2 She acknowledged receiving the Chanel handbags but claimed she returned them unused.2 The investigation also uncovered 19 million US dollars in cash in Hak Ja Han's personal safe deposit box.2 At 83 years old, Hak Ja Han has faced mounting legal scrutiny as the Unification Church—also known as the "Moonies"—continues to draw controversy; the organization has been banned in Singapore and ordered to disband in Japan.2
