A Sydney gardener has been ordered to pay $187,500 after orchestrating the illegal removal of 287 protected trees to enhance water views for an adjacent mansion.[1] Yi Wang carried out the unauthorized clearing in the Woodford Bay area of Longueville between November and December 2023, affecting a 1,210-square-meter section of council-owned bushland.[1]
Justice Rachel Pepper of the New South Wales Land and Environment Court determined that Wang's actions destroyed habitat for protected wildlife, with ecological recovery expected to take between 20 and 30 years to complete.[1] Wang received cash payments for the work, typically left in a shoe at the property's front door.[1] Lane Cove Council described the incident as "the most serious environmental destruction in the area's history."[1]
