Hanson-Young warned that if the government refuses to implement the necessary measures, the Greens will bypass the executive and push their own version through the Senate.[1] She stated: "If you are not prepared to do what's needed here, well, we'll take this out of your hands and we'll do it in the Senate ourselves."[1] The senator has suggested that online video streaming services could shift from automatic ad playback to an opt-in model where users actively choose to receive advertisements.[1]
The government took over 1,000 days to respond to a bipartisan inquiry led by Peter Murphy in 2023, with the report submitted on budget day, May 12.[1] The current Labor proposal restricts television advertising to three times per hour between 6 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., bans sports celebrities from endorsements, and prohibits betting company logos on sports uniforms.[1] Both the Greens and the opposition have expressed concern about the inducements offered by sports betting companies.[1]
