San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is on track to return to the sidelines for Thursday's preseason game against Tennessee, just weeks after a serious automobile accident.[1] Shanahan sustained multiple injuries in the July 14 crash, including a concussion, broken ribs, a fractured nasal bone, a broken hand bone, and more than 40 stitches above his eye.[1]
During a Saturday news conference, Shanahan reported substantial recovery, stating that aside from occasional headaches and fatigue, his symptoms have improved considerably.[1] "I feel pretty good. My body feels great. I just need to get this annoying cast off. My ribs feel good, except when I sneeze. My head feels much better," he said.[1] The accident occurred when Shanahan reached for his phone while driving a Tesla operating on autopilot at approximately 20 miles per hour.[1] Acknowledging responsibility for the preventable collision, Shanahan reflected on the incident: "Any time you cause an accident that was completely avoidable, you feel pretty stupid, especially when you have a chance to hurt someone else."[1]
