Fastmail has announced the launch of a European Union data region, allowing users to store their email data on the company's own servers located in Amsterdam instead of the United States, where all account data was previously housed.[1] The service comes at no additional cost, with existing pricing remaining unchanged.[1]
The company provides transparent documentation of data flows, including the locations of primary and backup copies as well as failover procedures.[1] For EU-region users, the primary data copy resides on Fastmail's Amsterdam servers, with at least two copies maintained at the primary location and at least one copy stored in a geographically separate location.[1] All users' emergency backups are stored in Philadelphia.[1] Users in the US region have their primary copies stored in either Philadelphia or St. Louis.[1] Account holders can switch their data residency region through Settings under Users & Sharing → Team Settings.[1]
As an Australian company, Fastmail remains subject to Australian law.[1]
