The initiative was organized by Kano State Governor Aba Kabir Yusuf as what he described as a "bold social intervention" to ease the financial burden of weddings on vulnerable families.[1] Each bride received 200,000 Nigerian naira—approximately $145—designated as a dowry and business startup capital, while couples also received household items including beds, mattresses, blankets, sheets, and carpets.[1] The weddings took place simultaneously across all 44 local government areas in the state.[1]
Governor Yusuf, who took office in 2023, has prioritized social welfare programs as a centerpiece of his administration's agenda.[1] Thirty-eight-year-old widow Malama Ainau Mudi, who remarried at the event four years after her first husband's death, expressed her gratitude: "Today's date will never be forgotten in my life. My husband died four years ago, and today I married my new husband, and his love and care will ease my years of widow life."[1]
