Watson had signed a contract with publisher Transworld after the 1993 election, which later transferred to Random House Australia 1. When Keating read the final manuscript in mid-2002, he became infuriated during a flight and subsequently sent multiple "dreadful faxes" expressing his objections 1. Keating's grievances centered on several points: Watson had violated the unspoken "deal" between a prime minister and his speechwriter, the book contained too much of Watson's own perspective, it subjected Keating to psychological analysis, and Keating felt betrayed 1.
