A fourteen-year-old student carried out a deadly shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the northwestern suburbs of Bangkok on Friday morning around 10 a.m.[1][2] The shooter had killed his grandparents at home beforehand, then brought his grandfather's nine-millimeter handgun to school where he opened fire.[1][2] At least seven people died in the attack, including five school staff members and the shooter's two grandparents.[2] An additional sixteen people were hospitalized, with seven in critical condition.[2] Most of the injured were between twelve and fourteen years old.[2] The shooter subsequently took his own life.[2]
Investigators believe the teenager may have been under pressure from his grandparents regarding his academic performance.[1] The school announced it would close from August 10 through August 14, with staff working remotely.[2] Prime Minister Anutthin Charnweerakul pledged to review Thailand's gun laws in response to the incident.[1] This represents the country's most severe mass killing since 2022, when a former police officer killed thirty-six people, including twenty-four children, at a kindergarten in the northeastern region.[1]
